PAWS for Faith

PAWS for Faith Comes to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church

St. Peter’s Church has decided to partner with PAWS for People (a non-profit volunteer pet visitation service organization – in a pilot program. This new program is called PAWS for Faith. As part of this project, you will see certified therapy dogs in some of our services, and around during coffee hour and other gatherings. Please feel free to pet these friendly therapy dogs.

There are many benefits of Pet Therapy. Here are just a few:

  • Lowers blood pressure ▪ Improves cardiovascular health
  • Releases endorphins (oxytocin) that have a calming effect
  • Diminishes overall physical pain
  • The act of petting produces an automatic relaxation response, reducing the amount of medication some folks need
  • Lifts spirits and lessens depression
  • Decreases feelings of isolation and alienation
  • Encourages communication
  • Provides comfort
  • Increases socialization and sense of community
  • Reduces boredom
  • Decreases anxiety
  • Helps children overcome speech and emotional disorders
  • Reduces loneliness

Another part of this exciting program is the ability to have a PAWS for Faith team (certified therapy dog and owner), who is a St. Peter’s Church member, visit members of our congregation when they are in a hospital, a nursing home, a medical rehabilitation facility, or confined to their home. If you or someone you know in our congregation would benefit from a therapy pet visit, please let Mo. Donna Jean or the St. Peter’s office know [(302) 653-9691] so that we can get a visit scheduled.
