Flags for Heroes
Coordinated by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church
Honoring the Heroes in Our Lives
We thank the 2021 Sponsors who honored their Hero or Heroes – past or present – who made a positive impact on their life or on the world. Heroes come in many descriptions: veteran, active military, first responder, medical personnel, teacher, mentor, family member, friend or person of inspiration.
We use 3 x 5 feet Flags mounted on a ten-foot pole. They were displayed May 26 to June 2, 2021, on the south front section of historic St. Peter’s Cemetery on North Main Street, Smyrna; across from the George C. Wright Jr. Memorial Park. We thank the Town of Smyrna for lighting our flags during the night while they were flying.
Sponsorship is $50 per flag. Each flag has a medallion with the name of the Honoree and the Sponsor. A list of Honorees and their Sponsors were published in the June Smyrna Extra, were posted on our Facebook page the last week of May, 2021 and can be viewed using the link at the top of this page.
If interested in sponsorship, we will begin accepting Sponsors for 2022 starting January 1, 2022. Please contact St. Peter’s Office by e-mail: [email protected] or phone 302-653-9691 with any questions.
$50 sponsorship is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Proceeds are used to pay maintenance expenses for our historic cemetery that are not covered by our current endowment earnings and to increase our cemetery perpetual care endowment to meet today’s cemetery care expenses and future expectations. Building up our cemetery perpetual care endowment will enable this historic cemetery to become financially self-supporting helping us to continue providing ongoing beauty and respect to all those entrusted into our care; each of whom was a hero in their day to those who knew and loved them.
As you can see from the picture above, the burial section of our Cemetery has a lot of room for future interments. We remember each person in our cemetery was loved by their family and friends and was a hero to people in their day. We consider caring for their final resting place as an outreach ministry. One does not need to be Episcopalian or a member of St. Peter’s to be buried here. Currently, individual plots are $1,000, of which $800 is placed in a Perpetual Care Endowment Fund to create income into perpetuity for the care of the plot. Please contact the church office (302-653-9691 or [email protected]) for any questions or additional information.
