A brief history of St. Peter's in Smyrna Delaware:

St. Peter's, designated as a National historic site, was founded in 1740 and has been continuously serving the community since that time. In 1827 the current parish building was erected using bricks that were brought here in tall ships. Those bricks formed part of the original foundation for the St. Peter's building in Duck Creek Crossroads. The current building has been renovated and expanded through the years to include a pre-school, a parish hall, a chapel, tiffany-type stained glass windows in the sanctuary, and a recently refurbished pipe organ that is now over 200 years old.

Smyrna, Delaware is an historic growing community nestled in the center of the state. Originally known as Duck Creek Crossroads at its founding in 1755, Smyrna was a major port center for agriculture and lumber and was considered a crossroads for commerce.

The Town of Smyrna is home to over 6,000 people. It has a vast array of educational opportunities for students of all ages and its proximity to employment and recreation, enhances the community life of which St. Peter's is an integral part.

Delaware is the second smallest state in the union and is located in the Mid-Atlantic section of the east coast. It is an easy driving distance to Atlantic Ocean beaches and many major cities such a New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Baltimore.

Delaware is known for its diversity in industry. It offers everything from major chemical companies to agriculture, poultry, and resort hospitality. As one of only two states without sales tax, Delaware boasts that it is the "home of tax free shopping".

St. Peter's Today:

St. Peter's is a parish with many varied working ministries such as altar guild, lay readers, Sunday school, a pre-school, and the ministry to the local Home of the Chronically Ill. Through these ministries, the parish has enjoyed sharing responsibilities with its rector emphasizing mutual support and accountability.

St. Peter's is a family sized congregation whose age range is nicely balanced. The parish is made up of people from Smyrna and surrounding communities. We are a friendly, caring, family-oriented and active, growing parish that warmly welcomes people. This is especially evident on Sunday mornings at the passing of the peace. A highlight of each Sunday service is the children's homily. Often the children's responses to the homily bring smiles of delight to all parishioners.

The parish enjoys a true sense of fellowship during activities such as Sunday coffee hour, our annual pancake supper, annual craft show and flea market, men's club, supper club, special breakfasts for both Mother's and Father's day and other celebrations such as birthdays, baptisms, weddings, etc.

St. Peter's tomorrow:

In the next 2-4 years, we expect St. Peter's to attract younger families and more families from surrounding areas that will increase our financial base enabling us to serve the community in even more effective ways. Specifically, our goals are to expand adult and youth Christian education, improve the physical facilities, enhance our spiritual growth, and encourage more participation by more members of the parish.

Our conclusion is just the beginning of what we expect will be an energizing new relationship that will lead St. Peter's into the next millennium. Praise the Lord.
